Nicky Samuel in the VIP enclosure at the Isle of Wight Concert in 1969

Sunday was the day of the concert; and soon after breakfast Nigel and I went to the airport to collect my brother and Hazel, who arrived looking cheerful, and walking arm-in-arm. We drove them straight to the concert site, where David Litvinoff ushered us into the VIP enclosure. The famous faces there included Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. I didn’t dare to talk to either of them, and I was glad of Hazel’s company. After a while, she and I sat down on the row of seats closest to the stage, and I asked her about Nigel and Michael X.

‘They’re orf ter Trinidad again soon,’ said Hazel cheerfully. ‘Michael’s bin dahn ter Cornwall – ‘E’s seen your Nigel’s mural – said it was “Great, man!”‘

Litvinoff, who had also sat down next to me, sighed at her remark. ‘Ah, yes. “Great, man!” Most perspicacious. So good that the colonials are being properly educated, don’t you think?’  Before either of us could answer, he went on:

So. You and Nigel. Bed-and-breakfast. Highly commendable: seeing how the other half lives. But I fear I shall have to eschew such delights. Keith Richards has just invited me to spend the night on his yacht – we’re going to write a movie together.

At that moment the folk-singer Tom Paxton stepped onto the stage. There was a cheer from the audience, and everyone settled themselves down for the start of the concert.
