Not only was he approachable, unlike many pop stars; but both he and Bianca, considering the amount of dope around, were pretty straight: Bianca extremely so. Mick was also clever, and did not talk about music the whole time. Since I am practically tone-deaf this was great so far as I was concerned. I must admit that I only really liked the early Stones records when their songs had what I thought were good lyrics.
Gradually Mick and I became friends. Perhaps this was partly because I wasn’t intimidated by his fame. Of course, I was flattered that this man should be in my house because he was the famous man he was; but I expect that, like the rest of us, he was lonely; and perhaps he didn’t feel safe in many places, fearing that most people simply wanted to use him. In those days I was the perfect answer for anyone like Mick Jagger. All I wanted was to entertain and have fun, and if famous people came through the door, I was flattered but not overwhelmed. In fact, I felt a great deal safer with the famous ones such as Mick and Bianca, because I knew they didn’t need me for anything, as opposed to the great mass of hangers on.
